The Story

Founded 65 years ago in Chennai, Witco is one of the early pioneers in modern retailing of luggage in India. The company was founded in 1951 by the late MPC Mohamed, one of the pioneers of the plastic industry in Chennai. The firm called West India Plastic Trading Co (Witco) was established in George Town, Madras. It has come to be known as one of the most trusted brands in the country. Early on, Witco made a wise decision to move away from manufacturing and focus only on retail. The liberalization of the economy during this time brought new life to Witco.

A couple of multi-level destination stores were setup on Anna Salai and Usman road. These were followed with landmark stores at Anna Nagar, Adyar, Cathedral Road, and Mylapore. The company has around 10 stores in Chennai.

Witco stocks international brands such as Samsonite, Delsey, American Tourister, Case Logic and Caprese and Indian brands include names such as VIP, Skybags, Wildcraft, Baggit, Lavie and their much loved in-house Witco brand. Witco understood that a lot of their customers preferred soft luggage from hard, personalized designs, light weight, extra security such as TSA locks and four wheelers and have constantly stocked products keep up with market trends.

The company was later recognized for being of the one of the most innovative brands in the retail luggage space. Some of their innovations over the years include,

Graduated with Honours in Retail Management at University of Surrey UK. He also acquired practical knowledge in retail management at UK’s leading department store chain John Lewis, London. He has been instrumental in re-launching the "Witco" brand for luggage, bags and accessories. This business unit achieved 30 percent share of luggage sales in the first year itself. He has also introduced a mobile based loyalty program “Witco Priority Club”. This scheme has been delighting the patrons with timely information and insights ensuring sales growth even during downturns.
